The best present of all: Love

*P.S I know it’s a little late but still worth sharing**

When I first came to America, one of the first Christmas songs I’ve fallen in love with was “give love on Christmas day” — by Jackson 5. The message of helping others, and giving love towards everyone you meet is something I still hold close to my heart.

Perhaps it’s from coming from a place where we didn’t have much and relied on family is probably why this song resonates with me so much. But as I’m older, the meaning of giving love — even if you don’t have money — is more important and prevalent than ever.

This “gift” of love is something that can be given every day and to anyone. You don’t have to like that person or know them, but some love in their life can make a huge difference.

As a child, our school would go to retirement homes and sing to retirees (this song, in particular, I remembered because I would belt it as loud as I could). There was a lady sitting right in the front row and would cheer us on and sing just as loud as we did. She told us Christmas was her favorite season because kids would visit them and liven up the place. She didn’t have any living relatives left so the songs and laughter from Christmas was something she always looked forward to. Although it was just singing for us, She was deeply thankful for a little bit of love each year.

So for this Christmas, and for each day, let’s strive to give a little love to everyone we meet. As young Michael Jackson puts it, what the world needs is love.

Merry Christmas everybody!
